Veronica / Speedwell
Veronica officinalis | Scrophulariaceae
Veronica is a common yard weed that can become invasive, and is often grown as ground cover.
They thrive in poor damp soil.
Most speedwells are annuals and self seed easily from seeds from the previous year's flowers.
Infusion is useful for coughs and catarrh.
As a lotion it is effective on skin eruptions and slow-healing wounds.
As a garden herb it is quite easy to grow and very showy when in flower.
It is tolerant of most climates but we have found it very frost tender, so a sheltered position is best, although it does prefer full sun for at least half of the day.
