Common Mallow      |           Malva sylvestris    |            Malvacea

Mature plant

This beautiful, herbaceous perennial, creates the illustrative look of a Cottage garden, when dotted around. It grows to about 60 cm in height and seems to flower on every available part of the plant.

We have found it very tough, climatically, and it has survived well, despite the extremes of temperature and season that happen today. The flowers can be quite delicious in salads and the leaves can be steamed to add some vitamin A, B and C to the vegetables.

We make a very effective ointment from the pulped root in Autumn.

It has very similar properties to other Mallows including Musk and Marsh but is more potent than either of the others.

We treat it as an annual, but as it self seeds confidently you are assured of reasonably maintenance free gardening with this plant.
