Licorice/ Liquorice
Glycyrrhiza glabra | Leguminosae
We have found that this perennial root herb is impossible to predict as far as where it wants to live in the garden.
Almost always after planting, it will come up somewhere else instead, or as well.
Friable soil seems to be best if you want to harvest the root as heavy soils make it very difficult to access the root at harvest time.
Sweetwood is an excellent tonic herb that no self respecting herb garden should be without.
It is a mild laxative and helps acid indigestion.
Licorice helps to stimulate the body to produce its own interferon.
Its constituent glycyrrhizin inhibits prostaglandin E2 production.
Licorice also nourishes the adrenal glands and soothes irritated mucus membranes.
Licorice is added to other herbs to improve the flavor, and the herb helps to induce feelings of calmness, peace and harmony.
