Elder / Elderberry
Sambucus nigra
This is a beautiful deciduous shrub that will be evergreen in a warmer climate.
Elderberry never really goes to sleep here, but slows down in Winter.
The creamy white flowers herald the onset of Spring and by Summer the wine coloured berries are everywhere.
We use the flowers to the Elder to treat colds and sore throats.
The crushed leaves can be applied to bruises.
The berries taste wonderful, and are very high in vitamin C.
A tablespoon of fresh Elderberries mashed in one cup of water and brought to the boil makes a great analgesic headache brew.
