Native or African Iris Dietes grandiflora Iridaceae
Often called 'Native Iris' in Australia this beautiful perennial that actively compliments the Cottage garden look is native to South Africa.
Dietes is sometimes a slow starter but rapid once it settles in and very easy to keep in the garden once it is established.
No special treatment is required and they do not consume huge amounts of water.
The soil does not need to be rich but they do not do well in compacted soil, and although they will survive in the shade, the excel in full sun.
So, as long as the roots can breathe a little, you can plant and forget.
The strappy foliage bunches well and stays all year round, as the herbaceous perennials and annuals disappear over winter.
