Betel Leaf is a rather beautiful upright climber with simple, heart shaped leaves that have a have a waxy, glossy surface.
The flowers are bisexual or unisexual, in terminal or leaf opposite spikes. Fruit is small, dry, with several rounded bulges.
The Betel Leaf plant has a characteristic pungent odour and is used to treat fever, as an expectorant, toothache, coughing, asthma and pleurisy.
As a food, it makes a great 'wrap' for prawns and can be shredded to add to salads and quick stir-fry's.
