King of Bitters / Chuan Xin Lian
Andrographis panicultata | Acanthaceae

As bitter tonic, it acts well on the liver, promoting secretion of bile. Used in jaundice and torpid liver, flatulence and diarrhoea of children, colic, and strangulation of intestines as well as for colds and upper respiratory tract infections.
Several active constituentshave been identified from the leaf and rhizome, including andrographolide, deoxyandrographolide and other diterpenes.

The King of Bitters grows as an herbaceous perennial in some parts of Australia but in others it is best dealt with as an annual.

It is a lover of full sun for most of the day and will grow to about 1m in height if the soil is well drained and slightly sandy.

It seeds in late Autumn and self seeds rather well, to ensure next years crop.
